SARAWAK CULTURAL VILLAGE

Located in the foothills of Mount Santubong, 32 km north of Kuching, Sarawak Cultural Village has been founded as a "Living Museum" which provides an excellent introduction to the cultural traditions of all the main ethnic group in Sarawak, while at the same time promoting and preserving the Sarawak's cultural heritage.

With increasing number of young tribal people being tempted from their Longhouses into the modern sector of the economy, many of the country's traditional crafts had begun to die out. Here in the Cultural Village the aim was to impart the old arts and crafts to a new generation, which has been accomplished with great success.

Here in the cultural village, visitors will have the opportunity to tour the various ethnic houses which are connected by boardwalk from the traditional Iban Longhouses to the nomadic Penan Settlement, and have a look at native crafts demonstration such as wood and bamboo carving, basket weaving, bead work and pottery making. Following the tour, visitors will adjourn to the mini-theatre for a superb 40 minutes cultural show performed by the residents which offer visitors a glimpse into the various traditional dances of Sarawak ethnic tribe. Following the show, time permitting, the craft shop may be visited for souvenirs before rejoining your car for the drive back to Kuching.

Visiting Sarawak Cultural Village is an appealing way to experience ‘Instant Sarawak’, especially for visitors lacking the time to head into the jungle areas.
