Welcome To Sabah

Sabah, ‘Land Below the Wind’ is dominated by Mount Kinabalu, the centerpiece of the Kinabalu National Park and the highest mountain in South East Asia. Located just 2 hour’s drive from Kota Kinabalu, the capital, Mount Kinabalu is a nature lover’s dream come true. Host to hundreds of species of flora and fauna, it will enchant and fascinate any visitor. An easy 5 hour walk takes you to 10,000 feet and a tranquil hostel Laban Rata, the base for a push to the summit. Unlike most major mountains, because of its ease of access, well maintained tracks and facilities, it can be tackled by anyone from 10 years to 70 with a reasonable level of fitness.

Located just 1 hour flight from KK is the thriving city of Sandakan, the base from which to explore Selingan Turtle Island, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Sukau Region. These areas offer a unique opportunity to observe and study endangered species in their natural habitat. Sepilok is home to over 100 wild or semi wild Orangutans, most of them orphaned as a result of logging operation. Most baby Orangutans are taught their basic survival skills of climbing, nest building and food identification by the Park Rangers before slowly being pushed out farther into the real rainforest where they survive on their own resources.

Selingan Turtle Island is the base for a study of the nesting habits of the endangered green turtle. About 1 hour by speedboat from Sandakan is this secluded tropical island complete with national park accommodation. Turtles normally come ashore after dusk and are easy to locate as they dig their nests. Often young turtles can be seen emerging from the sand in the protected hatchery, whilst at Sukau, you can journey up river to see Proboscis Monkeys and other wildlife.

Centrally located from KK is Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park offering good snorkeling, diving and idyllic sandy beaches. Only 2 hour drive north is the largest ‘tamu’ market in Sabah, Kota Belud held every Sunday morning, it is widely attended by local villagers and is famous for its buffalo and a variety of local produce.

Adventure seekers can find an outlet for their enthusiasm in river rafting, jungle trekking, deep sea diving or climbing. For those who want to relax in luxury and comfort, Sabah also offers the luxury of the Tanjung Aru Resort and Sutera Harbour or the sophistication of the Hyatt Kinabalu and Le-Meridian. For the travelers on a more restrained budget, a range of hotels exists, from the air-conditioned comfortable Cititel Express to Hotel Shangri-La and Promenade Hotel to functional air-conditioned budget hotels.
